Summary
- Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has made over $200 million worldwide, with $137 million from the domestic market.
- The movie might be on track to surpass the earnings of the first two films in the series.
- The entire Sonic trilogy might soon reach $1 billion of revenue at the international box office.
It’s no secret that Sega’s unlikely movie adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog was a critical and commercial success, but seeing it turn into a successful franchise was still a shocker.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has made more than $200 million worldwide, with $137 million coming from the domestic market, reports Variety.
It’s not the first time, nor the second, that Sega’s most recognizable mascot has crossed this milestone in theaters. Both previous Sonic movies made more, leading to high expectations for the third entry.

The Christmas Day box office had something for everyone. Despite some fierce competition, Mufasa came out on top.
At this point, it’s clear that Sonic’s success is not a fluke. Rather, he seems to be getting better and better.
Both Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 peaked at around $300 and $400 million worldwide. Impressively, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is on target to zoom past them once it ends its global run.
How much did Sonic the Hedgehog 3 cost?
According to a different Variety article, Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s budget might have been as high as $122 million. The other chapters of the series, by comparison, were below $100 million each.
This means that Sonic 3 needs to make a much bigger haul to generate a comparable return on investment. Whether it will follow the trajectory of its predecessors and surpass $400 million remains to be seen.
As it stands, no Sonic movie has yet reached the success of 2019’s Detective Pikachu, but Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is not too far behind. That’s before we consider the significantly higher budget, $150 million, for Nintendo’s movie.
Things look even darker for Sega and Paramount if we confront Sonic’s box office with the $1.3 billion raised by The Super Mario Bros. Movie. However, neither of Nintendo’s pictures has yet been adapted into a successful series, though a Mario movie sequel was announced.
This might get the movie closer to another target: the $1 billion box office for the whole series. As it stands, Paramount needs less than $100 million to clear that milestone, and it seems likely that they will.
