Elden Ring: Nightreign Crossplay

Elden Ring: Nightreign Crossplay

It has been a busy couple of days at FromSoftware, as the Japanese studio works to manage expectations and keep players informed after the bombastic announcement of Elden Ring: Nightreign during The Game Awards.

As with any game that leans so heavily on cooperative multiplayer, people started to wonder whether there would be some good news for groups of friends split across different platforms.

To prevent any rumors from getting out of hand, FromSoftware game director Junya Ishizaki came out today to clarify that no, there will not be cross-play between platforms.

Elden Ring: Nightreign Not A Live Service Game Confirms FromSoftware

Elden Ring: Nightreign won’t be a live service game, according to its games director Junya Ishizak.

According to Ishizaki, Nightreign will follow a similar system to the original Elden Ring title.

This allows players in the same family of consoles to play together independent of generation, despite not having access to other types.

In Ishizaki’s words, “PS4 players can play with PS5 players, and Xbox One players can play with Xbox Series S and X players, but not between platforms”.

Albeit this was expected, it is nonetheless disappointing news, in an era when even some executives behind the consoles have taken a more amicable tone towards competitors.

Players hoping for a cross-platform adventure can look forward to next year’s update of Baldur’s Gate 3, which promises to add cross-play to the Larian hit.

If you are a PC player feeling down about Elden Ring: Nightreign not having cross-play, make sure to sit down for more bad news.

According to the official Bandai Namco website, the Elden Ring: Nightreign network playtest will only be accessible on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S and X.

Once more, this is not a shock considering that FromSoft has a history of leaving PC players out of early network testing, but it is disappointing nonetheless.

Other journalists have cited security concerns, as data miners have a much easier time picking a PC test build apart than their console brethren (though this has not stopped crafty types from trying).

FromSoftware’s Elden Ring: Nightreign is bringing the franchise back with co-op multiplayer battles.

Outside of gaming shenanigans, FromSoftware has been caught in the middle of business rumors, as reports swirl about Sony working to acquire Japanese media conglomerate Kadokawa.

FromSoft director Junya Ishizaki has said he does not know the progress of negotiations or if they are still happening.

Whether Kadokawa keeps its subsidiaries in the dark or Ishizaki has a great poker face, none of it will matter if Elden Ring: Nightreign comes out in good shape in 2025.
